After suffering a ban on mangoes, traders are bracing themselves for an EU restriction on imports of paan. The EU’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) annual report warned of consistent cases of salmonella contamination of paan, a betel leaf plan that is eaten largely by Gujarati and Bengali communities, and is also used during religious ceremonies and for religious displays.

There are a number of businesses in the UK that sell paan and rely on the import of the leaves.EU inspectors will be sent to India in September to investigate the matter further, after which import restrictions could be imposed. Leicester MP Jon Ashworth has expressed concerns about the possible ban and has urged the government to work with traders in the UK to find a solution should this be proposed by the EU
